Chicago Police officers secure the area in the 3600 block of North Tripp Avenue, the scene of a barricade situation this morning. (Abel Uribe / Chicago Tribune) Update: Police News Affairs said the barricade situation has ended. Sometime about 8:30 p.m. police entered the home and found the man unresponsive, according to a CLTV photographer at the scene. Police said they are conducting a death investigation. Details to come. Chicago police have been on the scene of a barricade situation involving a “despondent” man for more than 12 hours on the city’s Northwest Side. Police received a call before 7 a.m. from a person who had contact with a man inside a single-family home in the 3600 block of North Tripp Avenue, Police Deputy Chief Roberto Zavala said. Initial reports indicated the man was threatening to shoot himself, but police spokesman Roderick Drew said he could not confirm that because it might “inflame the situation.” The man, in his 60s, was despondent, and for that reason police have barricaded the area, Zavala said in a news conference at the corner of Waveland and Lowell avenues, where police had set up a command post. At 7:30 p.m., police were still on the scene trying to coax the man into surrendering. Another police spokesperson said the man has a sick dog that was being treated at a local animal hospital. The dog is not in danger of dying. Police were initially trying to determine whether the man became despondent over the dog. Police don’t know if the man is armed and don’t believe he has any hostages, Zavala said. There have been no threats to the public, he said. Traffic has been closed off on Addison Street between Milwaukee and Keeler Avenues. Students at nearby Schurz High School were evacuated from Saturday sessions at the request of Chicago police. All the students at the school were safe, said school principal Mary Ann Folino. The Chicago police team on the scene included more than eight squad cars, two ambulances and a fire truck. — Vikki Ortiz , Staff
