I found my niche as a DJ in 1991, it started for me in baby steps at The Cotton Club, formerly in Chicago’s South Loop. I was fortunate to have a friend at the time (DJ Flame aka Derrick Frye) who partnered with resident DJFrenchyon Saturday nights. What started out as just something to do on Saturday nights became a obsession. Again, being in the right place at the right time, I soon developed my ear for mixing matching beats and music that were hot at that time from Uptown MCA artist and Teddy Riley’s New Jack Swing. I was so amazed how they could beat match several genres of music from R&B, Hip-Hop, Dance, House, Reggae and even some stepper’s music! Being a part of the experience was the ultimate rush for me. I found a new found respects for djs seeing how that could influence a crowd. During that time I never honed by technical skills behind the decks, but still had the a ear, the will, and the itch!!
Years had gone by since I ever stepped foot into a club let alone djing. It wasn’t up until 2007, that I went out one night and stepped foot into a sports bar in Northwest Indiana called Longshot’s, where I heard a young DJ by the name of Solo putting down some really tight mixes in hip-hop. Soon later I was again fortunate to put my skills to the test where DJ Jenn Booty gave me a forum to practice my craft. She was so patient with me showing me how to hone my technical skills behind the decks I gained confidence enough to perform in front of a crowd.
Now I look forward to taking the next steps in producing mashups and mastering beat making. I also want to grow my mobile DJ service, showing my other side as an entertainer. My goal is to create an experience for my patrons, meaning attach memories to music. Who doesn’t have a memory attached to a specific song!!
